practice exam

Before you begin, read and make notes on last semester's ENG 11 final exam text, "Informing Ourselves to Death" by Neil Postman.

Give yourself 1 hour and 50 minutes total to complete your practice exam.

At the beginning of your timed period, read Verena von Pfetten's New York Times article "Read This Story Without Distraction (Can You?)." Then, with the readings by Postman and von Pfetten in mind, write an essay in which you discuss the importance and impact of mass information in the digital age.

You must convey a clear understanding of both texts by integrating ideas and quotations from both into your own essay, or, at least, summarizing them. You must refer to both readings in your essay and cite your referneces in MLA style.

You may use a print dictionary. This is  not a test of memory--it is an open-book test: you are expected to use the Postman speech and the von Pfetten article and any notes you've made on these texts as you write. Please do not refer to any other notes.

Any time you use exact words from the readings, you must use quotation marks. Any time you quote, paraphrase, or summarize, you must refer to the author by his or her last name.
