"Using ESL Students’ First Language to Promote College Success"

Andrea Parmegiani will present his recently published book Using ESL Students’ First Language to Promote College Success (Routledge, 2019).   Based on classroom observations, reflections and in-depth interviews carried out with his students at BCC, Andrea will show how a strategic use of the mother tongue in English courses classrooms facilitates second language and literacy acquisition and academic success across the curriculum.

 

Andrea Parmegiani is Associate Professor of English and ESL at Bronx Community College of the City University of New York (CUNY).  His research explores language inequality in South Africa and the U.S., with a focus on academic literacy in higher education.  To increase success indicators among Hispanics at Bronx Community College, he created a link between ESL and Spanish composition courses.   His book Using ESL Students’ First Language to Promote College Success (Routledge) is based on a longitudinal study of this link.
