During the Gilded Age many powerful people with different agendas towards the lower class arise.  Andrew Carnegie a wealthy philanthropist who donates millions of dollars to great causes like medical research and education but treat his employees poorly who are lower class citizens. Mrs.Astor only focused on the wealthier class of citizens, all she cared about was the high society. Then people who are the opposite and wanted to bring awareness about the slums of New York City and the people that live in the tenements.  Author Henry George wrote about poverty and why it exists in cities where widespread advances in technology and social services. Another important person who wanted to bring awareness of the lower class people was Lillian Wald who made social reforms to nursing directed towards the low class immigrants of the lower east side.
