HONORS PROGRAM

The Honors Program at Bronx Community College offers academically enriching and enhanced experiences to highly motivated and qualified students. Students can enroll in designated honors courses, work on honors contracts in regular courses and apply to be a BCC Honors Program Scholar.

Honors Courses: Students can enroll in a designated honors course. Honors courses are for self-motivated students who are interested in challenging themselves academically. These courses are highly interactive and emphasize critical thinking and strong writing skills. To qualify, a 3.0 or higher GPA and a minimum of nine college credits is required for current students. Current students who have not yet earned nine college credits but have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA are eligible with the recommendation of an advisor in consultation with the Honors Program Coordinators. New students with no GPA and no remedial needs are also eligible with the recommendation of an advisor in consultation wiht the Honors Program Coordinators. Students who complete the honors course with a B+ or higher will receive an honors credit notation on their official transcript.

Honors Contracts: Students enrolled in a non-honors course may opt for an honors contract in many of
the courses offered at BCC. Upon approval from the instructor, students will enter into an honors contract that enables them to earn honors credit in a non-honors course. The contract is online at the Honors Program web page on the BCC website. The honors contract is an agreement between the student and the instructor that specifies the honors level objectives and tasks to be completed by the student in addition to those of the normal class. To qualify, a 3.2 or higher GPA and a minimum of nine college credits is required for current students. In exceptional circumstances, a student who does not meet these guidelines may, in consultation with the Honors Program Coordinators and the instructor, be approved for an honors contract. Students receiving a B+ or higher in both the course and the honors project will receive an honors credit notation on their official transcript.

Honors Program Scholar: Students who are motivated to complete 4 or more honors courses or honors contracts while at BCC have the option to apply to become an Honors Program Scholar. Objectives of this component of the Honors Program is to promote academic excellence, encourage civic responsibility and build self-esteem. Students who maintain a 3.4 or higher GPA and have completed or are currently enrolled in at least one honors course or honors contract qualify to apply to become an Honors Program Scholar Candidate. The application process involves submitting a completed online form, submitting a written essay, and be interviewed by the Honors Program Coordinators. If accepted to be an Honors Program Scholar Candidate, students can then move forward in fulfilling the following requirements: maintain a 3.4 or higher GPA; complete four or more honors courses or honors contracts with a minimum of 12 college credits (each with a grade of B+ or higher); complete a community engagement project; complete a capstone Honors Program Scholar ePortfolio; and meet regularly with the Honors Program Coordinators. Students who have met all the requirements will receive special recognition as an Honors Program Scholar at the annual Honors Program Celebration and receive a certificate, gold cord and medal. Interested students can apply to be an Honors Program Scholar Candidate at the start of the fall or spring semesters.
