If you answered YES to either of those questions, see our tutor hiring qualifications below:

 

TUTOR SELECTION CRITERIA:

 

The following general guidelines are used in academic departments to recruit and hire tutors:

1.     Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better;  a department standard may be higher

2.     Must have earned a grade of B or better in English courses 

3.     Passed all of the required CUNY exams and placement tests

4.     Must have taken a minimum of two courses in the tutoring department          with a grade of A- or better in each class

5.     Sufficient aptitude in conversational spoken English

6.     Bilingual skills are an asset, but not a requirement

7.     Experienced in using computers, researching the Internet, and utilizing other relevant technological tools

8.     Recommended by at least one faculty member from the Department or program in which the individual wants to tutor

9.     Flexible blocks of time, two hours minimum,  available for tutoring and meeting with faculty

10.   Demonstrated interest and enthusiasm for tutoring

11.   Able/willing to participate in CRLA National Tutor Training

TIPS FOR TUTORS

  • Update your resume to reflect tutor experience and/or skills
  • Visit the department where you think you could tutor;  meet key staff
  • Meet with the Perkins Tutoring Center staff to determine openings
