In a major effort to improve the quality of tutoring and tutor training, Bronx Community College has undertaken a substantive effort to develop and implement an intensive tutor training project.

 

Since 1999 the Perkins Tutoring Center, funded by a  New York State Education grant,  has addressed tutoring issues.  We designed and  standardize the training and certification of all tutors hired at the college.

 

Major Objectives of Perkins Tutoring Center:

 

  • Continuous improvement in the quality of tutor training currently offered at the college
  • Standardization of criteria for tutor recruitment and selection
  • Improvement in vocational satellite tutoring by providing course-specific tutoring
  • Development of collaborative tutor training from participating departments
  • Development of a tutor training manual and materials to be used by tutoring programs at the college
  • Implementation of a training schedule
  • Maintain national Certification by the College Reading and Learning Association at three levels

Tutor Training 

Level I is offered twice per year for 2 five hour days usually in the first month of each semester.

Level II is offered once a year after a survey of interest

Level III is offered once every other year for interested tutors

Note:  Only Tutors working at  BCC  are eligible to enroll
