Every semester, the Perkins Tutoring Center delivers several rigorous, interactive, two-day tutor training sessions certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. The main purpose of these training sessions is to help improve the overall quality of tutoring across the campus. Essentially, we want to ensure that students are receiving the best possible professional tutoring at Bronx Community College. Participants gets hands-on information and perform exercises in a variety of subject areas, for example:
- Note taking Stress Reduction
- Tutoring ethics Test Taking
- Plagiarism Students with DisAbilities
- The Socratic Method Time Management
- Interpersonal skill development 12 Step Tutor Cycle
The training provided by the Perkins Tutoring Center has become very popular throughout the campus, and supervisors from all departments send their eligible tutors to the training. In fact, the tutoring sessions usually get filled up within days after announcement.
Since 2008, the Perkins Tutoring Center has trained
and certified 328 tutors!
The CRLA-accredited training on campus has three Levels:
- Level I for entry-level tutors
- Level II for tutors with intermediate experience
- Level III for "Master Tutors" and tutor supervisors
An individual must complete each level sequentially. Level I is first, Level II next and then tutors enroll in Level III, master tutor training. To get the certification for any level of tutoring, the tutor must be a BCC tutor, attend both days fully, and complete 25 hours of hands-on tutoring. No exceptions.
