Context: While this map was drawn by a group of Indian chiefs on deerskin at the request of South Carolina's governor in 1721, it captures important views of Native American life before European colonization. Rather than detail the geography of the area around the southern colonies, the map represents the web of social networks of the Catawba confederation--including the English settlement of Charles Town (the rectangles on the left) and the interconnected circles representing various allied tribes such as the Cherokee.
