Pulling down the statue of George III by the "Sons of Freedom," at the Bowling Green, City of New York, July 1776
Print-Friendly Format (PDF): Pulling Down the Statue of George III
Context: In the Bowling Green section of Lower Manhattan once stood a gilded lead statue of Kings George III of Britain. George Washington’s troops and New Yorkers promptly torn it down on July 9, 1776 after a public reading of the Declaration of Independence concluded. This painting completed around 1859 by Johannes Adam Simon Oertel contains some historical inaccuracies but its intention is clear.
