Forcing slavery down the throat of a Freesoiler (1856)

Printer-Friendly Format (PDF): Forcing slavery down the throat of a Freesoiler

Context: The United States expanded significantly as a result of gains made during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). With land expansion came the question: would slavery expand as well? Freesoilers insisted that slavery should remain untouched in states where it already existed but not expand to new territories. The Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854) continued to exacerbate tensions over the slavery question.
