Welcome to Writing in Music!

Writing in Music presents effective uses of writing in music classes as a way of facilitating student comprehension and improving students’ musical discourse.  The assignments may be useful for any instructor of MUS 11, but is especially helpful for Writing Intensive (WI) sections.  This resource contains two sections:  the first scaffolds the concert report into a sequence of less-formal (low-stakes) assignments and shorter formal assignments to build up to the concert report itself, while the second section presents several types of writing assignments with examples specifically for music.

The goal of this resource?

This ePortfolio provides music instructors with assignment ideas that enhance student engagement with course material, concepts, and formal assignments in a more meaningful and goal-driven way.  Any of the assignments presented here can be easily adapted or modified for any content being covered, as well as other courses, including MUS 12.
